Strategic Partnerships
with
Leading Factories

Myth #1: A Supplier of Import Products needs multiple international suppliers in each category to hedge their bet in case something happens.

TRUTH: This is only true if your supplier partner is really not such a good partner, and their overseas factories do not view them as a strategic partner. As a customer, how can you know which of these factories actually made your product at any given time? Further, there will be differences in product from factory to factory that will create unrest with your customer as they expect product consistency and do not like unexpected variations. The best case is to be a strategic partner with the best, world class factory per category so that when times get tough, you can depend upon them to deliver consistent value.

Myth #2: Asian factories are not trustworthy.

TRUTH: There are unscrupulous factories all over the world, but at GIS we ONLY partner with the best in class factories by category to insure product consistency and quality. Most quality Asian factories will make whatever their customer asks them to make; consider the possibility that the reason the product is below spec or short count is because your current vendor told them to make it that way to enhance their own margin ...

Myth #3: each category should keep both a domestic and an import option.

TRUTH: There is merit in this philosophy depending upon the scale of the business; can it support both options with a reasonable volume? Further, is there a valid domestic option to pair with the import option? Some categories, such as gloves, are nearly 100% imported, so be careful, your “domestic supplier” may not be so domestic after all ...
